On the last morning of his short stay in the Lakes and as the
weather was sunny and dry, Ian fancied a walk before heading
home.
What would be a suitable fell for an hour or so's walk that
was also conveniently close to the start of his route.
The obvious local fell was Sale, one he always enjoys and it
overlooks the A66 and would be very practical for Loes and I
as well.
The gate to Sale Fell walk when starting the
walk from the northern side of the fell.
Loes needed to go to Keswick and Dylan didn't
need a big walk, so she joined us briefly for the initial part
of the walk which took us to the seat near the church.
My main walking partner for today, Ian.
This is the memorial seat where Loes turned
round, went back to the car and headed off to Keswick . . .
Ian and I continued onward and upward with Dougal.
Through the old gate and looking back at Binsey,
with Bassenthwaite Lake just showing next to the stone gatepost.
Views to the north and west as we gradually
climbed up alongside the wall.
The high ground is Setmurthy Common and the
Wainwright Outlier, Watch Hill.
As we round the corner we saw Sale Fell's partner,
Ling Fell on the opposite side of the Wythop Valley.
Ian strides out, up the western end of Sale
Fell.
This area has a lot of undulations and the path
winds its way up across the grassy route to the summit.
A passing cloud casts a slight shadow but the
day was dry and the views uninterrupted by the weather.
Saying that, we found the distant views of Helvellyn
and behind us Scotland, difficult to see in fine detail.
The view from the top . . . see for yourself
what I mean.

The path beyond the summit drops down to the
gate on the Lothwaite side.
Today we divert slightly to the right and head
up to the minor cairn up on the high point of The Rivings
Big skies ahead as we look across to Lothwaite
and to Bassenthwaite Lake, seemingly at the head of the Wythop
Valley.
The darker shadow on Skiddaw is in fact Ullock
Pike, an ascent of which has to be one of the nicest medium
sized walks in the Lakes.
The seat on Lothwaite gives the best views down
to the lake . . . to Keswick and beyond.
Dodd Fell stands clear to one side of Skiddaw.
The name it has been given matches other fells elsewhere in
The Lakes and implies an 'outlying fell'.
We turn left again, you find yourself doing
that a lot when you walk anticlockwise, and head back down,
back to the seat by the church.
That's Sale Fell summit ahead in case you were
wondering.

There's
a wide footpath, almost a track down the valley between
Sale Fell and Lothwaite. |
Looking across, we re-gain
views down to the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake. |
No point in showing you the seat again . . . so here's the
gate again.
The difference is that Loes is not standing by it, but hopefully
she is close by after her trip to Keswick.

She certainly was and we meet up again at the Bassenthwaite
Lake Station.
Ian headed off as he had a fair way to go, but Loes and I
decided to stay a little longer.
There was little in the fridge at home for lunch and it would
be churlish not to pop in here to sample some of their delightful
wares seeing we were so close.

After all,
the old station master was flagging us in. |
A vintage bus lies
hidden behind a screen as it is prepared for 'official
unveiling' once finished. |

While we had lunch we noticed a promotional flier
inviting us
(and everyone it must be said) . . . to a party.
In a week or two's time it will be their "3rd
Birthday"
and a perfect excuse to have a "Birthday Bash".
They were offering great wines, beers and a barbecue,
only the good weather they couldn't predict.
In fact we attended the event which occurred
between the date of the walk and the date of
this posting
and had a great afternoon on the train,
complete with great wine, beers and the promised
barbecue.
They even had some live music to make a really
nice event
and we never got wet at all.
