Swallow Barn, Loweswater, Cumbria.

Basic Camping Barn accommodation at an affordable price.

Come and stay on a farm in the heart of the English Lake District, so beautiful that the valley was chosen

for the opening scenes of the Beatrix Potter Film "Miss Potter", staring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor.

Swallow Barn is a traditional farm building set in the picturesque valley of Loweswater, Cumbria.

It is an excellent base for taking both high and low level walks, in spectacular scenery around the quieter western fells,

but still close to the more popular peaks that you may also wish to conquer.

Anyone can stay in a barn, whether going away with friends, family or as part of a group (we are particularly popular with youth clubs, cycling and walking groups, as well as Duke of Edinburgh Award groups and cadets).

Askill Knott overlooks the lake and the 2 mile walk should take you about an hour.

Swallow Barn is situated on the valley road overlooking Loweswater.  It is convenient for visiting Crummock and the ever popular Buttermere Valley.

A short drive south or a walk over the Loweswater fells brings you to the more remote western valleys of Ennerdale and Wastwater.

The barn is close enough as a base to scale Scafell Pike

and the high fells of the western and central Lake District.

Should you wish to travel further, the market town of Cockermouth is 8 miles, Keswick or the famous Honister mines are just 10 miles away.

If your interests are more historically orientated try Maryport, steeped in Roman history, Carlisle or Hadrian's Wall which are all within a day's outing.

Alternatively take a drive to the quieter Solway coast, famous for its bird life and seashore environment.

How to find us . . .

Swallow Barn can be found on most maps, often shown as Waterend Farm.

From the M6 leave at junction 40 (Penrith) and head for Keswick.  Stay on the A66 avoiding Keswick itself but at Braithwaite take a left turn signposted to "Lorton via the Whinlatter Pass". Down through Lorton village, turn left onto the Buttermere Road (B5292) and follow the valley up heading towards Loweswater.

Do not turn to Buttermere but continue on via Scale Hill, an old hotel.  Continue on past the Loweswater Village sign and the Kirkstile turning and then up the short rise till you see the lake.

At the far end of the lake, just beyond the grey phone box is Waterend Farm.

Swallow Barn is the building on the right where the road narrows.
