Playing catchup with village life now we're back, but also making the effort

to meet friends and go on longer walks where the better weather and spare time allows.

The Monday after the Church's Harvest Sunday is a supper in the hall and includes an auction of produce.

An array of fruit, veg and other items, all home grown according to the auctioneer.

I think we have to take that with a pinch of salt, as I've never seen some of the produce on offer thriving in anyone's garden.

Still, the gifts to the church are transferred to cash equivalents

which can be distributed via Church charities in a much easier form.

Amongst the offerings was this little critter . . .

It turns out to be a common yellow ladybird,

common but one I had never seen before.

We offered it its freedom outside before the auction started.

After the recent rains we had a walk down to the lake and saw some of nature's harvest.

These were two Fly Agarics, one with a black slug just crawling up for his harvest supper.

These were the rains before Storm Babbet, but even so the lake levels were up.

The land behind the wave wall and footpath was flooded, making the walk 'interesting'.

Apologies for an out of focus picture but the camera couldn't cope with the moving water (and I didn't have my glasses on)!

These are two vortexes caused by water draining through two pipes under the path. Normally the pipes are only partially submerged.

What the picture does show however is that the vortexes are rotating in opposite directions which debunks the theory about the rotation of the earth.

Local factors such as the rotation of the stronger one, has spun the adjacent weaker vortex the opposite direction.

The departing rain at the head of the valley.

The last of the cloud clears from the top of Grasmoor

Plans are afoot to change all this, due to the cessation of extraction of drinking water from the lake.

On Sunday 8th my friend Barbara, Pete Burgess's mum, announced that she would be in Keswick

so Loes and I invited her to lunch and a small walk over at Lingholm on the shores of Derwent Water.

You try and take a nice photo but they want to play with the rabbit and sing . . .

. . . so I bring the dogs in to quieten them down.

Lingholm, apart form the nice cafe, has a relatively new octagonal walled garden, the original one of which was inspirational to Beatrix Potter.

We had a stroll around the garden after lunch and marvelled at the produce they still managed to be growing at this time of year.

Out in the flower beds there was still colour to be seen.
Agapanthus to the left but this one was an unknown to me.

I'm fairly certain that your unknown flower is a Slavia . . . Angela  (peakwalker.net)

There are several nice walks through the grounds of the Lingholm Estate, including the 'Round the Lake' path for Derwent Water.

We headed out on a short walk and found ourselves following the alpacas.

They have a herd here and you can pay or volunteer to walk them as a therapy for yourself, or even perhaps, for them.

This one standing proud as I take a picture over the fence between them and the public path.

The roof and chimneys of Lingholm House seen across the field.

A full circuit of the lake is logged below but today we just enjoyed a shorter stroll through the woods and then returned to the car.
