 Keswick's Castle Head

Map created by EveryTrail: GPS Trip Sharing with Goggle Maps

A beautiful day and chance for a walk to a local viewpoint and beauty spot known as Castle Head.

I'm in work today, so it's a brief walk during a late lunch.

The view from the door as I finish a quick lunch and head out for a walk.

A short walk along the road in the direction of Borrowdale.

A small gap in the wall hides a set of steps leading into the woods.

Into the trees and there's a welcome drop in temperature.

There's a brief but steep climb up this track so I'm not as cool as I could be !

At the top of the woods, a school group gets ready for a little rock climbing adventure.

I detour around the base of the summit rocks and extend the walk slightly.

Here I find the crags the children will use. Carabinas clink on the rock above.
Looking down to the lake, others are enjoying themselves too.

I reach the top by a short scramble, not the usual way up this time.

Looking east, there's Clough Head and the Helvellyn Ridge, Great Dodd being the next summit in view.

Down on the lake, the ferry passes the yachtsmen, causing them to wallow in the boat's wake.

Looking south this time, down the length of Derwent Water,

to Castle Crag and the rounded outline of Great End.

A close up of the ferry and the many small craft on the lake today.

Click here or on the photo for a full Derwent Water / Castle Head panorama.

Framed by the bough of a Scots Pine. the southern summit of Skiddaw

with Carlside to the left, Little and Lesser Man to the right.

The grand circle of " The Heads "

looks down on the manicured lawns of Hope Park's 'pitch-and-put' golf course.

The houses and shops of Keswick remind me that it's time to be getting back.

Back on the main road, an inset seat looks inviting, but there's work to be done !
