The Buttermere Valley from near Loweswater Church

A wave from Matt, the head brewer.

Just down from the Kirkstile Pub is the park Beck bridge.

A short walk up the bed of the stream brought us to a deep pool where we could skim stones and let the dogs swim.

Alexander wanting to join in, but he is too young to do the first and the water is too cold to do the second.

Harry swimming out following the splashes.

We walked on up the Mosedale track past the farm and out onto the open fell side.

Just beyond the out-take wall we cut down and crossed the river.

The main track continues up the left hand side of the valley, but having crossed over we follow the old mine path on the opposite side.

Last one to the tree is a sissy - can you spot it Sam ?

Looking down a small mine entrance hole.
Checking through the spoil heap for minerals.

On the side of Hen Comb there are old mine workings that have virtually become overgrown. We diverted up the fell side slightly to find them.

Ann, Jo and I walked here last year

Quartz crystals and streaks of lead ore.
From the mines we crossed over to the Mosedale Holly

The bridge over the river was still a hundred yards further on, so we crossed the slow running stream rather than divert the extra distance.

One small person now knows that wet rocks are rather slippery - still damp trousers will soon dry in this heat !

The Holly seems to have sprouted legs this spring.

Jack and Alexander enjoying the shade provided by the branches.

Camera shy - Not me !

This afternoon, while Cathy is away, Alexander is seemingly content with the company of myself and his brothers.

Having successfully reached the objective of today's walk, we turn for home.

Hey fellahs, you're supposed to be up on this path !

Back on the main track

we discovered that the tadpoles

have also benefited from the warm weather.

They have abandoned

their frog spawn in favour of a spot of free swimming.

It's a direct track home now, down the valley towards Low fell, past some fine old slate fence posts.

The Kirkstile Pub with the church behind.

Righteousness after thirst !
