The Solway Coast

17th February 2002

A Fellwalkers non-fellwalking day.

Weather: Rainy in the hills. More promising on the coast.

Location: The Solway coast north, from Workington to the wonderfully named Skinburness.

A Drive up the coast, taking in the towns and villages along the way. Excellent views over the Solway Firth to Dumfries (Scotland).

After a little retail therapy in Workington, we decided to drive home the scenic route,

in search of a place to excercise the dogs, and also to visit part of Cumbria we had not seen before.

Here a small local fishing boat returns to Workington Harbour, past the coastal wind farm.

The distance fells of Skiddaw are covered in cloud.

The forground is the more industrial scene at the entranced to the river

Further up the coast, Maryport has redeveloped its dock and marina.

This is the fishing dock next to the Aquarium.

New housing adds character, and breathes life into the old industrial area.

Views across the Solway, with sunshine on Criffel on the Dumfries side.

The Lifeboat House at Silloth. A trailer launched slipway boat by the look of it.

In the middle of the sandune and rock coastline, there suddenly appears lawns,

crazy golf, hotels and guesthouses, a pavillion and the seaside arcade.

Silloth is obviously the Blackpool of the Solway Coast !

Evening Sun.
